  • Witness the priest’s morning ritual

  • Hear the temple bell echoing across the grounds

  • Walk the quiet courtyards before tourists arrive

Perfect moment for photography + reflection.

Good for you because:

  • Calm

  • Slow

  • Deeply symbolic

  • No physical strain

If you’re staying at Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan, it’s a short walk.

8:00–9:00 AM

Breakfast at your hotel or a nearby café.

🚗 9:15 – 10:00 AM — Drive Nagano → Togakushi (Sacred Mountain Area)

Distance: ~20 miles

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM — Togakushi Chusha (Middle Shrine)

Sacred cedar forests + ancient architecture

—————————————————————————

Togakushi is one of Japan’s most powerful spiritual landscapes.

There are three shrines on the mountain:

  • Hokosha (Lower)

  • Chusha (Middle — perfect starting point)

  • Okusha (Upper — deeper forest, light hiking)

For your comfort + preferences, today focuses on the Middle Shrine + Optional Upper Shrine, perfectly paced.

Chusha Shrine Highlights

  • Towering 800-year-old cedar trees

  • Grand torii gate

  • Beautiful shrine buildings

  • Forest atmosphere

  • Energetic but not crowded

Walking:
Easy, flat, 5–15 minutes around the shrine grounds.

Photography Notes:

  • Vertical cedar lines = excellent design inspiration

  • Shrine ropes (shimenawa)

  • Symmetry + asymmetry dynamics

  • Stone textures + moss

🍜 12:00 – 1:00 PM — Legendary Soba Lunch (TOP recommendation)

Togakushi is famous nationwide as a soba capital.

⭐ Best choice:

Uzuraya (Top 3 soba shops in Japan)

  • Handmade soba using pure mountain spring water

  • Light, fresh, incredibly flavorful

  • Peaceful mountain setting

Alternative:

  • Teuchi Soba Togakushi (excellent)

  • Soba Yamaguchiya (very local)

Get:

  • Zaru soba (simple cold soba — trust me)

  • Tempura mountain vegetables (seasonal)

Perfect for your palate and energy level.

🏞️ 1:00 – 3:00 PM — Optional: Walk to Okusha Shrine (Upper Shrine)

This is one of the most iconic forest walks in all of Japan.

This trail is not strenuous if you walk slowly, take breaks, and only go part of the way.

Full walk:

  • ~2 miles roundtrip

  • Gently uphill

  • Well-maintained gravel path

You can easily do half of it, which includes:

The Great Cedar Avenue

  • A long path flanked by ancient cedars

  • Feels mythic, cinematic, sacred

  • Stunning photography

  • Calm, oxygen-rich environment

You DO NOT need to go all the way to the top shrine.

Stop whenever you feel satisfied — the journey itself is the experience.

This is absolutely aligned with your travel style:
calm, meaningful, visually rich, not rushed.

3:00 – 3:45 PM — Coffee/Tea Break in the Mountain Village

Recommended stops:

Togakushi Forest Botanical Cafe

  • Great views

  • Homemade cakes

  • Alpine air

Okushakudo Café

  • Rustic

  • Very charming

This is a perfect moment to rest.

Very relaxing.

🛏️ 5:00 – 6:30 PM — Rest at Hotel

Perfect time for:
